Shorter Blog Posts?

November 9, 2008 · 4 comments

Since I seem to get the least traffic here on Sunday, I figured today would be the best day to write a post like this.

My fiancee and a few close friends have pointed out that my posts are long, usually at least in the 500-word range (a mini-paper!) – or in the case of Thursday‘s post, over 850 words.  I guess someone forgot that he’s not in grad school anymore.  My reaction and defense to this criticism has been that I write like how I speak:  A LOT!  If you aren’t chuckling right now, you haven’t been in the room when “Professor” Capsun is giving a lecture on some topic that only he is interested in and everyone else is politely listening to, but he will go on until he makes the point and is adequately convinced that people have a better understanding of the topic.

But these “critics” do bring up a good point:  How long is too long and how long is just right for a blog post?  I am of the belief that it should take as long as it needs to, but I know information overload when I see it.  So, no promises on the end result, but I will make an attempt to keep the length of these posts at bay.  Unless my readers demand otherwise.  So, are my posts too long?  Too short?  Just right?  Or did I lose you after the first sentence?

Mahalo!

Haha. I struggle with the same problem myself. Even though I think I need that 800+ words to make a point, I probably lose people after the 100th word.

I enjoy the occasional long, well thought-out blog post and I WILL read lengthy posts in their entirety on other people's blogs. I liked your Thursday post, and the way it was broken up with bullets.

Of course, the ideal is shorter posts several times a day, but that demands time many of us don't have. I think 250 to 500 words seems like a good goal. But it's definitely a challenge for the more wordy among us.

As someone from the school of long, in depth blog posts, I have no problem with the length =P

I would use some more headings to break up the posts when there are logical places for it, but that's a personal web writing style thing. Mark Cuban writes long posts as well and never uses headings or anything

I don't mind the length of your posts. And I did chuckle right on cue.
