Miss Malia, Miss Hawaii USA?

Malia

My co-worker, Malia Schneider is competing to be Miss Hawaii USA 2009, a qualifying competition for the Miss USA pageant .  The competition is scheduled at 5 pm tonight at the Sheraton Waikiki.

So I just want to send a shout out and say, Good Luck, Malia! With her poise, grace, energy and excitement, she would make a great Miss Hawaii USA.  And, she’s from a neighbor island like me, so extra points to her for that.

If you didn’t know, Hawaii has done fairly well at the Miss USA competition:

  • There have been four Miss USAs from Hawaii:  Brook Lee (1997), Judi Andersen (1978), Tanya Wilson (1972), and Macel Wilson (1962)
  • Hawaii is only one of two states to have had four Miss USAs
  • Of these four, two were semi-finalists at Miss Universe (both Wilsons) and one was 1st runner-up (Andersen)
  • Our most famous Miss USA from Hawaii is Brook Mahealani Lee who won in 1997
  • Lee later became Miss Universe – a distinction held by only six other women from the United States

Other Miss Hawaii USAs include actress Kelly Hu (1993) and former KGMB weather reporter Kuualoha Taylor (1996).

But before Malia can compete for Miss USA, she has to take the Miss Hawaii USA crown.  So, let’s all send her good thoughts, vibes, and whatever else will help her achieve her goal.

Mahalo!
