Props and Slops: December 1-6
Dec 6th, 2008 by Capsun
My friend used to have a feature on his site during college called “Props and Slops” where he praised and put down as he saw fit. I am copying that feature and adding it to Capsun’s Corner. I hope to make this a weekly part of my posts, but we’ll see how long that lasts. I will break down my dishing into Hawaii, Tech, and Political categories.
HAWAII
- Props: Windward City Lights, the third annual event that precedes Honolulu City Lights by one week, near the Kaneohe Police Station, that drew its biggest crowd so far, several hundred people. The Royal Hawaiian Band performed, the Fire and Police Chiefs attended, as did State Sen. Jill Tokuda. Mayor Mufi Hannemann presided over the countdown and the actual lighting – and of course, he sang a song. One funny note is that the Board of Water Supply’s flood lights were used to illuminate the area, not working on a broken water main…
- Honorable Mention: A three-way tie, all about go! taking the Aloha name. First, laurelle commenting on my blog calling go! “No Aloha Airlines.” Second, Dave commenting on the Hawaii Blog: Following the same logic… Mark David Chapman should change his name to John Lennon and then go on tour singing Beatles songs! And finally, David Shapiro for saying: It’s like the Big Bad Wolf changing his name to Grandma.
- Slops: Mesa/go! Airlines for trying to take the Aloha name and brand (regular readers will be all too familiar with this issue on my blog).
- DIShonorable Mention: Paul Skellon, Vice President at Mesa Air Group, for looking like one of the least believable liars I’ve seen.
TECH STUFF
- Props: Alltop for adding Capsun’s Corner to their Hawaii listings.
- Honorable Mention: Guy Kawasaki (@guykawasaki on Twitter) for DMing me (sending me a Direct Message) a thank you for writing about Alltop.
- Slops: PayPal for being unable to send me my password after three requests this week. Luckily, @zztype was able to send money for me or I would have been unable to buy my personalized Twitter shirt.
- DIShonorable Mention: Me, Capsun, for getting not one, but two posts up past 8 am this week AND for being unable to figure out how to put an Alltop badge on this blog. If you know how, please let me know in the comments. One note, I have no clue how to adjust the CSS.
POLITICS
- Props: President George W. Bush (I know, I can barely believe I’m giving him props) for his “mea culpa on Iraq, the economic crisis and the 2008 election outcome for Republicans” as noted at The Huffington Post.
- Honorable Mention: The Supreme Court of Hawaii for ordering Gov. Lingle to follow the law on selecting and appointing members to the University of Hawaii Board of Regents. Now let’s move forward so the University can have some stability as it tackles these difficult times. If you missed it, you can get opposing views on this issue by Emeriti Regents Roy Takeyama and Ted Hong. I truly feel for the six regents who are affected by this ruling; while they can still contribute, ignoring the ruling may put the validity of their decisions in jeopardy.
- Slops: Those people who are claiming President-Elect Barack Obama is not a natural citizen and are taking their case to the Supreme Court of the United States. This issue has been discussed in detail by the non-partisan, extremely reliable FactCheck.org – twice! See it here and here. And they concluded that it is real. I was born in Hawaii and the Obama birth certificate in question looks just like the one I have at home.
- DIShonorable Mention: President George W. Bush (that’s more like it) for taking so long to see the error of his ways.
Hey, maybe this feature will cause me to write fewer articles about Mesa/go!…nah, probably not.
Mahalo!
Note: This post was updated on day of publication to include additional links and commentary.

Okay, I am seriously confused. I just copied the code from an ALLTOP Badge, went to my former (free) Wordpress blog, opened a text widget in my sidebar, pasted the code in — and it worked beautifully. Perhaps if you describe your problem ….?
Oh! I KNOW your problem! In the widgets section is a choice called TEXT. In that box you can type OR you can put in html (some restrictions apply). To put your ALLTOP badges on your blog, just go to:
Dashboard — Appearance — Widgets — Text — now click add, open the textbox, pop in your code, click save and wa-la!
Easy peasy.
After you do that, you can write back and ask for the code to add your photograph and your email link to the front of your page.
eh, mahalo for the honorable mention! praise only encourages me, ya know!
Quilly: Mahalo! I guess I made it out to be harder than it really was. It was a cinch. Thanks again.
laurelle: I’m an enabler like that…
