For Our Feature Presentation:

Presidents of HCCH

Earlier this year, I joined the Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu as one of its youngest members.  Mahalo to my uncle, Llewellyn Biven, for sponsoring my membership.  The Club was founded by Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole, Hawaii’s second Delegate to Congress.  HCCH, as it is called, is considered the “Mother Club” of the greater Hawaiian Civic Club movement which seeks to:

help elevate and promote their social, economic, civic and intellectual status, all while they would promote the principles of good government as they themselves became outstanding citizens, leaders in their communities so that they could and would take an active part and place in the civic progress of Hawaii and its people.

To commemorate our Club’s 90th anniversary, our current President, Leatrice Kauahi, asked me to moderate a panel discussion with former presidents of HCCH.  With the help of ‘?lelo Community Television‘s facilities and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs staff working on the series “Ho ‘oulu Lahui Aloha:  To Raise a Beloved Nation” we were able to bring this idea to life.

Come join me as I discover gems from the history of the Club, including our Holoku Ball (HCCH’s signature event), our scholarship program, important issues during these presidents’ tenures, and some famous leaders of HCCH.

To help tell the story of our Club, my illustrious panel of guests included:

  • Marilyn Leimomi Khan, who served as President from 2002-2003
  • Leatrice Kauahi, who is serving as President from 2008-2009
  • Keawe Vredenburg, who served as President from 1991-1992
  • OHA Trustee Walter Heen, who served as President in the early 1960s

The program airs tonight at 7 pm on ‘?lelo channel 53.  It will repeat on January 1 – same time, same place.  If you can’t watch the show on TV, you may also view it online.

Mahalo also to Blaine Fergerstrom (@zztype on Twitter) for letting me borrow his uniform for the shoot.  He ended up gifting it to me as an early Mele Kalikimaka gift, so I am doubly indebted and grateful to him.

Mahalo!

oh, i didnt answer your question about the february event.... i'm not sure. i might be a little shy. haha. are you going? when is the next meeting anyway? i'm so glad you'll be at meetings. i probably know other people but i just dont know their in the club yet. i was fortunate to be sponsored by a former colleague. i just happened to be looking at the website and i spotted her name so i asked her to sponsor me. ttys.

You are right, it is working. Maybe I didn't have quick time. By the way, you have a good on camera voice and look. Maybe you should explore some career with being on camera. I am still watching so I can't comment on the moderation (questions and dialogue) yet... but I am sure it will be wonderful. BTW, what's up with the campaigning? Hello! hahaha. So Capsun!

bjm/Bonny: Mahalo for stopping by and the comment. Welcome to the Club! I just tried the video and it worked. It may take a while to load if you don't already have the Quicktime player installed. If not, I have a DVD copy and could share it with you at the next meeting. Also, are you coming to the 90th anniversary event in February?

hey capsun-

i wanted to watch your segment but for some reason, can't get it to play. out of coincidence, i just joined hcch as well. i got my letter today...but i think the stuffing got messed up because someone else's name is on it... i have to call to check on it :). ttys.

quilly: If you really want to watch it, you can just follow the link "view it online" in the second to last paragraph. It should play fine on most computers, and is even formatted to work on iPhone.
