New Blogger Hardware

Reminders:

First, A Joke:

This has been on my mind for a few weeks, so now’s a good time to share:

Question:  How many software engineers does it take to change a lightbulb?

Answer:  None!  That’s a hardware problem.

Now, For Our Feature Presentation:

Aspire One

This past Sunday, as I was making my grocery trip to Costco, I found the perfect Christmas present.  For only $359.99, I bought an Acer Aspire One netbook.  Don’t know what a netbook is?  They are low-cost, no-frills, small-screened laptops primarily meant for word processing and going online (probably 90% of what I do on the computer anyway).

And the best part is that it is a present for all of you, for me, and for my fiancee.   It’s a gift to all of you because it allows me to do my blogging from anywhere in my condo, or anywhere period – and if you’re reading this, you must care what I blog about.  It’s a gift to myself because I’m a nerd, a geek, a productivity-lover and a gadget-lover – this device will let me satisfy all of those cravings and more.  And it’s a gift for my fiancee because now we won’t have to compete over who can use the iMac at home.  As the Kindergarten teacher, she should take priority on using the desktop computer!

Here are some specs:

  • Windows XP Home OS
  • 8.9 inch screen
  • Intel Atom Processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 120GB Hard Drive
  • 6-in-1 Media Card Reader (so it can read film from cameras by Sony, Olympus, Canon, and more)
  • Built-In G Wireless
  • Weighs only 2.2 pounds

I’ve been using it all week to write all of this week’s posts, so you know I’m getting my money’s worth.  While it isn’t for everyone, it should work for many people (the absence of a CD drive is a deal-breaker for many).  And, I did feel a little bad buying a non-Apple notebook, but for the same price as one of the newly-redesigned MacBooks ($1,299), I could buy three Aspire Ones!  So while it’s not as cool and nifty as the new MacBook, the Aspire One will get the job done – at a fraction of the price.

Mahalo!

Sid: Maybe I'll look into installing OS X. Of course, I'd probably have to ask you for help.

quilly: I like your weld idea! Good point on the DVD player, but I luckily won a new portable DVD player at my office Christmas party.

Well, this price is nice to know. My lovely, full-sized, Gateway (never again) which is just over a year old has a faulty connection. The internal power coupler seems to be loose, so I have to have the laptop just so and be careful not to jiggle it, or it will be operating on battery only, and I have to mess forever to get the power back again.

Repair shops want to replace the entire motherboard to Correct the problem ($$$$) when a cheap weld would do it -- except I don't know how. On the other hand, a motherboard and the aspire are about the same price and this does have a dvd and a nice large screen .....

Excellent decision =)

My only gripe (and this is not really even the aspire one's fault) is it is VERY difficult for me to write blog posts on planes, which is one of the main things I bought it for. The angle is just not comfortable for me.

So I usually go to TED and download a bunch of videos before the flight, and since they are 20 minutes each, I can knock out a whole boatload of those on the plane - and it's easier to download to a laptop to watch than on a portable DVD player.

And you know - people HAVE managed to install MacOS on it ;)
