RECAP OF THE CONTEST

Yesterday was the end of the contest I’ve been sponsoring and promoting for the last week.  Readers were asked to share their memories of The Real Aloha Airlines for a chance to win a $10 Starbucks gift card.

I didn’t get quite the response I was hoping for and participation wasn’t very high.  However, I am quite grateful to the four readers who submitted entries and comments.

I wonder, is this response rate normal?

• Did people not like my prize?  Would a Jamba Juice gift card or cold hard cash have been more enticing?  Or would people be motivated by a prize of greater value?
• Or was it the subject matter, perhaps?
• Or maybe it was the timing?  Perhaps it’s too close to Christmas and people are just too busy?
• What could I do to get more people involved?  If I do it again, I would like to see more involvement, but should I even try another contest again?

The only thing I can tell you about the real Aloha Airlines is that I knew a couple of the employees and they definitely rank among the nicest people on the island.

From Nathan, a first-time commenter:

My favorite memory of Aloha Airlines was the friendly people, great inflight magazine in Spirit of Aloha, and of course, the POG (passion, orange, guava juice). Of course the days of interisland travel before 9/11 when you could just show up at the airport 10 minutes before your flight were pretty cool too. If you missed your flight, just jump on the next one 30 minutes later. My how times have changed.

With Aloha, I flew them perhaps a dozen times – but nothing stands out, perhaps specifically because they were efficient, had good service, and I never had anything to complain about!

From Shayna, who commented after 6 pm, but I’m going to let enter anyhow (I did say I might do that):

i mostly remember being so surprised to receive their yummy warm cookies.  and SO happy!…i loved the vomit bag that karina & mike decorated for me — and they were so cute to put a pog juice in the bag too!

But wait, there’s more (said like they do on infomercials).  I am awarding consolation prizes to the other three.  To Nathan, for reminding me of my fond POG memories on Aloha when I was a little kid.  And to Quilly, for being the first contestant and trying to come up with any memory of The Real Aloha.  And finally to Shayna, for having the most amusing story.  They will receive an individual Moleskine cahier each.
