Top 10 Hawaii-Based Blogs
Dec 29th, 2008 by Capsun
Now that things are back to normal after the blackout, I can return to the reflective mood I was in a few days ago.
I actually got the idea of doing this Top 10 list from Ryan Ozawa over at the Hawaii Blog when he did a feature for another site. So here are my Top 10 Hawaii-Based Blogs:
- Howzit Howard: Howard often lives up to his “The Explainer” nickname, both on-air on KGMB and on his blog. Business-centered, but he often includes some insight and lessons he’s had from living in Washington, DC and by being in management. He’s also a lover of music, so he’ll have posts and references to those of his liking from time to time.
- Ian Lind: Investigative reporter Ian Lind continues to share his skills and findings with all of us – for FREE! His determination to get out a daily post is my inspiration to do the same. I’ve been reading his blog for years and got to meet him in person at PodCamp Hawaii!
- SidSavara.com: Our own local Lifehacker, although issues discussed are quite universal. Personal development, maximizing productivity and life hacking are what my real life friend writes about. He got me to attend PodCamp Hawaii.
- Hawaii Blog: How can I not include the appropriately-named Hawaii Blog? If you are a fan of the ABC series “LOST,” this is THE place for you. If you’re not, lots of the happenings in Hawaii are covered here. Also met at PodCamp Hawaii, although I had read it previously.
- Quilly Unshuttered gives you a beautiful photo of Hawaii daily. It’s great to lift one’s spirits. And don’t forget it’s sister blog, Quilly’s Pacific … Paradise?, whose Punny Monday contest is quite entertaining, although I’ve yet to guess one correctly. I met her at PodCamp Hawaii.
- Kam Family Blog is written by proud father Nathan. My favorite feature is the weekly poll. Nathan works in travel and PR, so you can get lots of good info from him. And, I still thank him for those $20 Saltimbanco tickets he pointed me to. We went to high school together and our parents work together, but we reconnected at PodCamp Hawaii.
- Quarterlife Cafe by Kim Fassler: I’m not quite a quarterlifer, but not quite a thirtysomething, so it is interesting to read about their/our struggles. Plus, Kim is in grad school in Washington, DC, so you sometimes get gems like her Obama victory celebration post, a result of journalistic instincts that compelled her to go out at 3 am in search of a story.
- Volcanic Ash by David Shapiro. I love his wit and wisdom. If only my irreverance could live up to his, I would be such a happy camper. A mixture of political, Hawaii and personal happenings make it onto his blog, much like mine. And he’s been abuzz with Twitter lately.
- The Kona Blog by Aaron Stene because I’m from Kona and still like to keep up with the happenings from back home. Plus, I’m on his Blogroll and never properly thanked him for that recognition.
- Hawaii247.com was started by former news professionals from West Hawaii Today, but this is more like a Hawaii Island CNN. They’ve actually had the scoop on a couple stories before either West Hawaii Today or the Hawaii Tribune-Herald picked it up. This may be the future of the news industry, but I’m not quite sure how they monetize their blog.
Obviously, I have a news-leaning bias, but that’s because I’m a serious person. What about you? Do you read these? Whether or not you do, what are your top Hawaii blogs?
Mahalo!

Nice list – I like QLC as well. I had never heard of Volcanic Ash (though I may follow him on twitter, not sure) but I visited just now and enjoyed it.
Nathan’s blog is fun too. And of course, the HawaiiBlog is well…aptly named. THE Hawaii Blog.
[...] Lastly,a hat tip needs to be given to Capsun for including the Kona Blog on his top ten list of Hawaii blogs. [...]
Mahalo for including my blog on your top 10 list of Hawaii blogs.
Sid and Aaron: It’s I who thank you for keeping me updated in your respective areas. I don’t have time to find those tidbits on my own, so I’m glad I can really on you both, the rest of my top 10, and the hundreds of other blogs I follow. I’m more educated and informed now than I ever have been previously!
Sweet! I feel extremely honored to be on your Top 10 list. I didn’t even know about some of the others — I’ll have to check them out.
Capsun, not sure my blog belongs on your list with the others you’ve included but I’m definitely flattered. BTW, you forgot one on your lists…YOUR BLOG…which is a daily read for me. Mahalo and Happy New Year!
Nathan: How modest of you! But your blog absolutely belongs on the list. For what is the point of making our world better if we aren’t doing it for someone, like our children? Reading about your child-rearing gets me excited (and prepared) about doing the same in a few years. I’ve really gotten the daddy bug planted, spending lots of time with two of my cousins’ infants.
Sorry I’m late. I’m not feeling up to snuff — wait, that’s not true. I’m doing a lot of sniffing and sniveling and nose snuffling. I believe I am allergic to Hawaii.
As with all people who have horrible allergies to that which they love, I’ll just have to learn to live with it. Occasionally though, it gets me and I go down for the count.
I’m glad I wasn’t down so long I missed this! Thanks for the mention — two of them, in fact! Much more than I deserve.
You’re welcome for the mentions. And thank you for coming even with a cold.
