IN MEMORIAM
- “Willie” the cat, Presidential Pet who died (January 4, but the notice went out on January 5)
- Griffin Bell, former Attorney General during the Carter Administration (January 5)
Now, here are the top and bottom performers as I saw them this week:
HAWAII
- Props: The Shidler College of Business, at UH Manoa, for going solar. While more still needs to be done, it’s a good start.
- Honorable Mention: Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument for being nominated to UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
- Slops: Stupid people, like this guy for not staying on the marked trail near a lava viewing area. We really should bill these people for their rescue efforts. It’s one thing to get lost on a hiking trail, but it’s stupid when you go off the established path that is well-marked with signs.
GEEK/TECH/BLOG
- Props: Sid Savara for helping me get the new Capsun’s Corner going here at capsun.org. You can read more about that if you missed it yesterday.
- Honorable Mention: A tie between Art Harris and Namecheap.com. Art Harris for returning to the world of blogging with his new blog, So That’s Life?. He writes commentary on coping with our tech-saturated world. It’s very well-written and I’ve added him to my Blogroll. Namecheap.com for allowing me to register capsun.org for only $8.81. And they included WhoIs Guard for free, for the first year. You know, so people can’t find my number and call me out of the blue.
- Slops: Me for not giving anyone any advanced notice of my move from http://exbor.wordpress.com to my new home here at http://capsun.org. At least I stuck up a notice, right?
POLITICS/GOVERNMENT
- Props: The. U. S. House of Representatives for finally making its official language gender neutral. They will now be saying “Chair” instead of “Chairman” or “Chairwoman.”
- Slops: Hawaii’s teen birth rate, for jumping 12%. Gee, I wonder if the federally-funded abstinence-only programs had something to do with it? By the way, only Alaska, Mississippi, and Montana beat us for higher birth rates.
That’s it for this week. Be sure to visit next week for another edition of Props and Slops, my favorite feature on Capsun’s Corner.
