Props and Slops: January 12-18

IN MEMORIAM

Now, here are the top and bottom performers as I saw them this week:

HAWAII

  • PropsHawaiian Airlines for still being America’s most on-time airline.
  • SlopsAll those people complaining about the decision by officials to close many government offices yesterday.  Howard Dicus has some great reasons why officials were right, and I agree with him. How fast we are to complain when things actually work out for the better. Would they have preferred that Hawaii be pummeled by near-hurricane force winds? Geez!

GEEK/TECH/BLOG

  • PropsKGMB9 (or should I say @KGMB9?) for a great write-up on Twitter:  what it is and why you should use it.
    • Honorable MentionHawaii for becoming the first state to make the DTV transition.  With a few exceptions, like PBS Hawaii, it seems to have gone off without much of a hitch.
  • SlopsNuevasync, a service that allows for over-the-air synchronization of Google Calendar, for doing such a great job updating their program changes that allow users to color-code their calendars, and then not making it available to long-time users like me. This is really only minor as I expect full functionality soon. Never mind, it works fine now.  Thanks, Nuevasync!

POLITICS/GOVERNMENT

  • PropsDavid Shapiro for making quite possibly the best non-legalese case for the Ceded Lands moratorium bill.
  • SlopsPresident George W. Bush (hey, it’s the last time before he leaves office) for saying, “We also reviewed our record, and this administration has had a good, solid record. I’m very proud of it.”  While it is definitely good and solid, it is far from one to be proud of.  Just check this out or what CNN has to say.  The Star-Bulletin put it succinctly, “History will be severe in judging Bush presidency.”  I, for one, believe history will view the last eight years as some of the darkest days for the United States. Of course, we are less than two days away from ushering in a new era of leadership that instills pride and optimism, not just in the U.S., but on the world stage.

That’s it for this week.  Be sure to visit next week for another edition of Props and Slops, my favorite feature on Capsun’s Corner.

Thom: Sorry it's taken me so long, I've been busy. As always, mahalo for your readership and comments. I definitely concede President Bush ensured the safety of our country, and for that he is to be thanked.

I still stand by my previous comment, but isn't it great that we can be cordial and even friendly when we limit our discussion to the issues and not about personal attacks?

I fondly remember Mike Sakamoto and Fishing Tales. Rest in peace Mike

Way to Go Hawaiian Airlines....you rock

@KGMB9 I'm still a fan of @KITV4 even though they don't follow me, Same with Mahealani. But you are rapidly growing on me and I could switch my loyalties. I like a great deal what you have to say.

Capsun - My friend. I have to strongly disagree with you about President Bush. I believe that the first day he took office, the main stream media never gave him a chance. They have never liked him and it all started with the chads in Florida, I believe. Oh well. I think and I strongly agree with President Bush and his record. I don't think these will be judged down in history as our darkest days. I can point my finger to the Carter Administration and we were severely in a darker era. With the current adminstration our borders were protected and I believe we were much more safe than ever before. Our military made me very proud and is strong and forceful. I cannot agree that a new era of leadership will instill pride and optimisim. Two things come to mind: Obama's choice for Secretary of the Treasury and his senate seat that he vacated. Smells like the same old same old to me. I will be making a more detailed post in my blog about the inauguration. Don't get me wrong, I wish him well...but I think this euphoria that has erupted is nothing more than a smoke screen.
