Vote for Holunape

January 28, 2009 · 5 comments

You already know that I always vote, right?  I believe that is how we make this a truly representative democracy for us to live in.  But I think my political/government posts for the last two weeks might have been overkill for many, so let’s depart from that topic.  While voting for American Idol may not carry the same sense of purpose, I hope you might have some interest in voting for the Hawaii Music Awards sponsored by the Music Foundation of Hawaii.  The principle is the same:  you vote for the candidate (er, nominee) that you like the most, for whatever reasons you think important.  Just like with elections for government offices, there are campaigns to get out the vote for certain nominees, so that’s what I’m writing about today.

Holunape does a great service to Hawaiian culture and music by singing traditional music and getting a whole new generation of Hawaiian music lovers to enjoy the musical styles that our parents and grandparents did.  I have to admit that I don’t listen to much new Hawaiian music.  Between my love for my iPhone and iPod playlists as well as my disdain for radio commercials, I just don’t get around to it much.  But I do know Holunape‘s music – and that I like it!  Their ability to get me to listen and like their music is just another indication of the caliber and transcendence of their musical efforts.  And the fact that Kekoa and I did our Master’s together and that Kama is one of my co-workers doesn’t take away from the truth that I enjoy their musical stylings.

But you don’t need to take my word for it:

  • Michael Keany, in Honolulu Magazine, called the album, “One of the year’s most enjoyable local releases.
  • John Berger, of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin called it a “Grammy-worthy album” in his original review.
  • Berger also put the album on his Hawaii’s Top 10 albums list, at #2, saying “Holunape honors tradition…but they also bring it forward.

Here’s the announcement that I received from them:

Holunape is pleased to be nominated for the category of “Best Traditional Hawaiian” by the Hawai`i Music Awards and humbly ask for your vote.  This is a people’s choice award as winners are decided by votes from all over the world.  Last year, there were almost 3 million hits in 3 weeks…more than any other website in the state of Hawai`i.  Vote online at www.hawaiimusicawards.com.  Voting ends on January 31, 2009 (one ballot per email).

I’ve already voted, so I hope you can do the same.  Here are instructions for voting for Holunape (or any other nominee, for that matter):

  1. Go to www.hawaiimusicawards.com
  2. Click on “Vote Now
  3. Enter a valid email address
  4. Select the “Traditional Hawaiian” category

I don't vote just to vote so I have been searching for an online sample of Holunape's music and can't seem to find one.

quilly: Good for you, you independent thinker you. If you go to the site, and enter your email, next to each nominee is a link to listen to a sample. It will play about 10 seconds of a few songs on whatever album you want to sample. Happy listening!

Done...thanks for the great site also BTW. I went through them all

Thom: Mahalo for doing that!

And mahalo to anyone else who may have voted.
