Macs *are* better than PCs!

Yesterday, I had to sit in a meeting for two hours, but that’s not the bad part.  No, that would be having to listen to my beloved Apple product, the Mac, get beat up and insulted by my co-worker SW.  Now, I realize that much like the age-old debate over Coke vs. Pepsi, this comes down to a matter of personal taste (pun intended!).  But that note on my header does say, “A daily dose of my take on things” so I’m going to share my positive take on the Macintosh, which has been re-branded the Mac, or the iMac, or the MacBook, or the MacBook Pro of late.

This will be a completely biased post praising Macs and Mac users everywhere. I hope to accomplish two things.  First, to get back at SW just a little.  Note that we are friendly co-workers, so this is really done in jest.  After all, I do own a PC laptop.  Although I could also argue that allows me to prove that my Mac is better.  With the demands of writing a daily post, I have to go with whatever motivates me to type out coherent thoughts here on Capsun’s Corner.  Second, I hope this will promote and foster some *lively* debate as I know some of my closest friends and frequent commenters are all PC users.

The Top 10 Reasons a Mac is better than a PC

Thom: Maybe this will help nudge you to my side of the fence. I tell people that a Mac lets you spend more time actually working whereas a PC often takes more time to work on it. As long as you visit Capsun's Corner, please feel free to use whatever platform suits your fancy.

David: Two very good points. I actually did think about those, but that wouldn't help my argument here. Besides, I warned it would be biased.

quilly: Yours is the story I'm going to tell from now on when trying to get someone to go with a Mac. Sorry for your troubles, I know you noted it on your blog.

Art: I pay for quality. Bill Gates has seen it many times. Guess you're not using it correctly if you've only seen it once. :-D LOL.

I like expensive toys too! When a mac ceases to cost twice as much as my Windows machine, maybe I'll think about getting one. Until then, I'll "suffer" and save. For the record, the one time (in 20 years) that I got a dreaded BSOD, I was able to track down the problem and fix it fairly quickly.

I learned to use a computer on a Mac. I switched to PC because I could afford it. I am typing this on my boy friend's 5 year old Mac because my 19 month old PC has died FOR THE SECOND TIME. Enough said?

I'm not an expert in comparing the two, and I do think there are a lot of flaws in windows, but I do have a couple points. One, if you were a virus/spyware maker, what platform would you use? The platform that like 90% of the world uses, or the one that 10% of the world uses? Viruses written for a mac would spread super slowly, and the whole point of a virus is to spread rapidly. If mac held 90% of the marketshare and windows held 10%, I can absolutely guarantee we would see many more mac viruses, and everyone saying how "safe" windows is, cause there's so few windows viruses.

Secondly, backwards compatibility is big for me, cause I like using older versions of programs. I still use windows programs/games from the mid 90's, cause I like them. With mac, the architecture might be more stable, but that's cause they start everything fresh with their new operating systems. Meaning that old programs don't work on them. I guess if you don't use old programs/games, this doesn't matter, but to me it matters.

I'm gonna be a fence squatter on this one. I have been a PC user forever. I did buy a PowerMac G-12 some years ago and struggled with it. I was to engrained with how a PC operates. I was always looking for the .exe files, the run command, how to unzip a file etc. It was horrible. But what I did notice, however, was that it rarely ever crashed. It just chugged away and did whatever I wanted it do, even though it took me forever, minute wise, to figure out how to get done what I wanted done. The graphics were great, the sound, everything, seemed slick. The Genius Bar I can't stand. The people there, every time I've gone have been snotty. But then I got a Dell XPS-720 with Windows Vista Ultimate. This was a replacement for an older Dell. I will say that I have never gotten the blue screen of death, it does what I want, when I want it and just absolutely has been a jewel. Sure I've made mistakes with it and had to restore it a couple of times but it always performs. I have no crapware and have never gotten a virus. I think that users just don't maintain their systems correctly. Downside however, it's a lot of work to keep my system up to date. I guess that what it all comes down to...can you teach and old dog new tricks? Maybe if I had started with a Mac I would understand it more and have a different view of the PC. It boils down to what ya know. So I'll sit on the fence until I know more. A computer is a computer.
