Support a Worthwhile Cause: Honolulu Twestival

February 6, 2009 · 4 comments

You already know that once in a while, I use Capsun’s Corner to support a community service.  But it has been a while, so today’s post is dedicated to the upcoming Honolulu Twestival (that’s a Honolulu Festival with Twitter folks doing the planning).  Twitterese is quite easy to speak, just replace the first set of letters of a word with “Tw” so that meetup is Tweetup, and so on.

Talk about Capsun being late to the party! The event will be held in less than a week from today, on February 12, 2009 at 5 pm at Oceans 808 (the former Ocean’s at Restaurant Row).  Visit the site to buy tickets, priced at $20.  I say I’m late because a lot of buzz has been going on for a while already:

  • Many have joined the conversation on Twitter
  • Fellow Tweep/blogger and travel agent Bruce Fisher has already written about it
  • 808Talk has covered it
  • The ever-present and ever-helpful NEENZ promoted it
  • Our local Twestival has its own Twitter account (@HITwestival) and Flickr tag ready to go
  • And finally, our Twestival has its own wiki (a collaborative info page) – pretty cool, huh?

So what’s all the fuss about? The Hawaii/Honolulu Twestival is part of a larger social media movement to support charity: water, an international group that wants to give every person the opportunity to access safe drinking water.  So, it’s a perfect fit for Hawaii, where we are completely surrounded by the ocean.  And yes, I do know that seawater is not potable, but it was for dramatic effect.

While this started with geeks and those involved in social media (I guess I fall into both categories), this event is not limited to geeks and social media folks.  The more the merrier, right?  And don’t worry if you don’t have a Twitter account (should that be Twaccount?), aren’t on Facebook, or don’t have a LinkedIn profile.  There will be enough of us there to tell you all about how to get setup.  And with the iPhone-heavy presence I’m expecting, we can probably get you signed up right there.

Finally, if you’re worried because it’s at a club, don’t.  I’m definitely not one of the cool kids, but they’re letting me in!  So why don’t you come join usIt should be a blast, be dope, FTW, or whatever adjective will get you to attend!

Mahalo!

You have chosen to Twestival during my last Photography 1 class -- which I have to finish as a prerequisite to Photography 2! Judy pretty much had me talked into going, but -- alas -- class.

Photography class sounds like fun, and important if it's a prereq. At least I'll see you later today at Unconferenz.

Sounds like loads of fun. twitter people are um ... crazy =P
