Props and Slops: February 2-8
Feb 8th, 2009 by Capsun
IN MEMORIAM
- Dr. Donnis Thompson, first women’s athletic director at UH. (February 2)
- Herman Lum, former Chief Justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court, 1983-1993. For a great story on Chief Justice Lum’s tenure, please read Ian Lind’s reflection. (January 26, but it didn’t get news coverage until February 5)
and
- Cisco’s Cantina in Kailua. (January 20, but reported February 3)
- Brew Moon Restaurant & Microbrewery. (February 3, per Erika Engle)
- Nick’s Fishmarket. (February 4, per KGMB9)
Now, here are the top and bottom performers as I saw them this week:
PROPS
- Popular free email service GMail for releasing the Multiple Inboxes feature. Basically, in addition to your regular inbox list, you can also see sent and unread messages, or whatever search paramaters you want, all right there at the inbox.
- The Hawaii State Legislature for reducing expenses in recognition of our tough budget times ahead. Per The Notebook, the House reduced it’s budget by $1.1 million, the Senate by $568,679.
- Mokulele Airlines, for launching its Honolulu-Maui service. This will undoubtedly put another nail in the coffin of Mesa Air Group’s go! Airlines. I am ecstatic! If you don’t know why, you’d better read this. Time for me to start planning that party I mentioned.
- Attorney General Eric Holder for becoming America’s first African-American to hold that post. In a year when we inaugurated our first African-American president, this milestone may not get the proper recognition it deserves.
- Apple’s immensely popular iPhone for having a commanding lead in mobile internet traffic. I admit that I am a proud owner of one, thus my enthusiasm.
- Major Tammy Duckworth for being nominated Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs at the Department of Veterans Affairs. The McKinley High School grad is probably the second highest Hawaii high school graduate in the Obama Administration, followed by President Obama himself. (Update, 2/9: Duckworth will be the third highest, with President Obama and VA Secretary Gen. Eric Shinseki above her. Thanks Dan Seto for the correction.)
- Insurance company GEICO for dropping rates in Hawaii. This is probably some of the best financial news we’ve heard this week.
SLOPS
- Comcast Cable for airing 10 seconds of porn during the Super Bowl in Tucson, Arizona. That must have led to some uncomfortable conversations in households throughout Tucson.
PROP AND SLOP OF THE WEEK
- Prop of the Week: Unconferenz 2009 for a very enjoyable day of grassroots tech/internet unconference. I hope to write a full post on it in the next few days.
- Slop of the Week: The economy for forcing the Honolulu Star-Bulletin to layoff 17 employees and change its format.
That’s it for this week. Be sure to visit next week for another edition of Props and Slops, my favorite feature on Capsun’s Corner.
Mahalo!

As a Geico policy holder I have to say, YAY!
And, I watched the tribute to Dr. Donnis Thompson last night. She was a ground breaker and deserves to be remembered as the face of positive change for female athletes.
quilly: Let’s hope our insurance stays at the lower levels. Dr. Thompson reminds us of the rich progressive history Hawaii has and should honor as we move forward.
