Maybe I Should Blog Less Frequently

February 19, 2009 · 10 comments

I’ve been swamped the last few weeks, both at work and at home.  So it gives me the perfect opportunity to consider something I’ve been thinking about since the beginning of the year:  Maybe I shouldn’t blog daily.

I know, I know.  Gasp!  The horror!  I would have to change my tagline up there that says “A daily dose of my take on things” – but it would only take a few moments, so shouldn’t be that problematic.

Being a blogger, while I’ve been mulling this over, I’ve also consulted a couple blogs that covered this topic somewhat.  First, my friend Sid at SidSavara.com wrote about Playing to Your Audience, then Leo over at ZenHabits.net wrote The 7 Reasons Posting Less Frequently can Increase Your Blog’s Popularity.  While Leo’s post is most directly related to this discussion, Sid’s also has some good points.

Here are Leo’s points that grabbed me:

  • 1.  More posts mean less scrutiny. Basically, by posting too often, my readers may miss my best stuff.
  • 5. Generate more comments with less frequency. Well, that would definitely increase my Return on Investment.
  • 7. Readers do not unsubscribe from too few posts. How true!  I get ecstatic when I see a new post from a blog that hasn’t been updated in a few days.  Maybe my readers will feel the same, especially if it looks like a particularly good post.

Sid’s lesson of playing to your audience is important. In posting daily, many times I entertain my own dalliances, out of the simple need to have a post.  In fact, the post you are reading at this moment could qualify as a dalliance.  By posting less frequently, I might be able to finally write my Evernote vs. Jott vs. Remember the Milk post I’ve been meaning to do since December.  And I could go through Capsun’s Corner and point out several posts that were less than stellar, but could have been, if only I had enough time to spend on them.

So dear readers, what do you think? If I were to abbreviate my posting schedule, I’d probably go with Monday through Friday to start.  Note that leaves four “regular” posts as one day a week would be my Props and Slops post.  Or, I might even consider posting whenever I had a really good post, hopefully at least once a week.

I wouldn’t do this for a lack of ideas. I have bountiful amounts of ideas.  It’s the time, energy, and effort to actually transform them into readable posts that tends to be my problem.

OK, I’m just asking and wondering.  Any help and feedback you might share would be greatly appreciated. Hey, would you be interested in a guest post?

Mahalo!

Honey,
I think you should blog less frequently... here's why:
1. I think you'd be happier producing quality over quantity.
2. I've seen you worry about posting on time... and I just don't think a healthy hobby should add stress to your life.
3. You need to spend more time on your long wedding to-do list!
Love,
Me :)

My motto is, life first, blog second. My readers expect to see me every day. If I miss one day, no biggie. If I miss two, my email box is crammed with "Are you okay?" notes.

But I blog to entertain me -- although the way I entertain me is by entertaining my friends. Blog to your agenda. What is it you're trying to accomplish?

My preference here is when you're teaching. I am always up for learning something new.

Just don't be like that Damon Tucker guy ;)

Capsun... blog when you want... don't let anyone tell you differently. I blog when I want... I don't blog to entertain people... I blog to entertain myself.

Don't take yourself so seriously and have some fun with some not so serious posts every once in awhile, and you might just find yourself being relaxed by writing.

I enjoy writing and find it relaxing, just as some people enjoy reading a book or watching TV... I find that fidgeting with my fingers on a keyboard, typing, researching, and just kicking back at times can be pretty relaxing.

I mean blogging sure beats doing a senior thesis or doing a work related task.

No offense, but this seems an odd "discussion." Wouldn't this question be absolutely dependent upon what you hope to achieve with your blog? It's a funny thing, but getting "traffic", as they say, seems a priority at times. Somewhat related could be some desire to "monetize" a blog. For what it's worth, in my own blog-efforts, I've come to sort of see it as joining this little digital news stand where we all get to set up a stall. Some of us have fast food treats, or maybe content that requires more digestion, laidat. But in the end, I'd think the inherent diversity has got to be good for the experience of it.

I go through blogging spurts, but then again I maintain now 3 blogs and a news aggregation site, Alltop. My request may be selfish, but I'd like you to choose us -- your readers, and continue with your daily dose. But, my advice from my heart is, do what makes you happy and gives you balance. :)

I'm not saying that yours suffer from this but daily can become a grind for the reader too. I have must-reads that I check daily but for most blogs, spotting updates via Google Reader is absolutely fine.

Now that you've established your brand, I think that periodic updates will work. If you continue to produce quality writing, people will find you. If it deteriorates, you'll suffer the consequences regardless of ho often you post.

I personally think the Monday, Wednesday, Friday routine is better than just posting whenever you feel like it. All the blogger schools -- hey remember Podamp Wordcamp Hawaii? -- say it's better to be consistent no matter how often you choose to blog. I myself have of late been remiss -- you are right -- the day job can indeed steal a lot of the day -- so I am schooling myself for Monday, Wednesday, Friday after a few weeks of posts that were sporadic at best. I enjoy reading you every day, but burnout is a real threat for us workaholics!
:) N

I for one just do a post when it suits me. That's the way I prefer it and don't have to live up to anyone's schedule but my own. Of course, I don't have a popular blog by all means, and that doesn't matter to me either. I just enjoy doing it. Your's Capsun, along with Quilly's and Web Considerations, are on my blogroll as I can't live without them. My point I unsubscribe to those to frequent posting blogs. I don't like it as it seems overwhelming. Your's is not one of those by all means. Once a day is great. Try one of iPhone blogs or Mashable. It's absurd. So I vote you do what you think is right for you. I aint leaving and I doubt many others will because you post less frequently. I get ecstatic when I see those that dont fill up the airways constantly also. I know there will be something very important to read and enjoy and participate in. :)
P.S. I'm giving Sid a try. You speak of him frequently so I'm going to check it out

How about a Monday, Wednesday, Friday? Then you can change it up to Tuesday, Thursday to keep people guessing. As for me, I like the daily posts, but it would be kinda neat to see one out of the blue after a hiatus of a day or two. However, please keep the props and slops!

I may be a bit biased as I have your blog in my RSS reader in a section of "A-List" blogs I never skip. Since I knew up front that it would be daily I was prepared for the Capsun onslaught ;)
