Props and Slops: February 16-22
Feb 23rd, 2009 by Capsun
Note: If you’re wondering about the contest results, they’ll be posted tomorrow.
IN MEMORIAM
- Scott Tanikawa, the first fatality in the 25 years of the Great Aloha Run (February 16)
- Socks, former First Feline, under President Clinton (February 20)
- Bob Sevey, former KGMB9 anchor and news director, remembered as a newsman to the end (February 20)
- Barbara Marshall, Honolulu City Councilmember and former KHON reporter (February 22)
Now, here are the top and bottom performers as I saw them this week:
PROPS
- Retired Hawaii Supreme Court Justice Steven Levinson for publicly expressing his disappointment that Hawaii voters passed a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. He felt “despair and heartbreak” over the reversal of his earlier landmark ruling.
- John Garcia (@johngarcia on Twitter) for helping sort out and restore my access to the Honolulu Advertiser blogs. For some reason, they weren’t working last weekend.
- Kaneohe Public Library for offering free Wi-Fi service. This will surely be appreciated in these tough times.
- Mayor Mufi Hannemann for taking a 5% paycut and requiring his top appointed officials to do the same. On the heels of my post on Would You Work For Free?, this is exactly the kind of leadership we need at a time like this.
- Howard Dicus for his post The truth about Act 221, in which he explains and defends Act 221. As politically unpopular as Act 221 remains, I agree that it does contribute far more to our economy than the credits cost.
- Bristol Palin for saying telling young people to be abstinent is “not realistic at all.” In case you’ve forgotten, she’s Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s daughter, the one who is a teenage mother. Too bad her mom and other conservative Republicans don’t share the same view.
- Bank of Hawaii for holding *FREE* financial seminars. In this economy, this sort of news is most welcome. (Sorry, this was originally and mistakenly posted in Slops. Bankoh definitely gets Props for this.)
SLOPS
- Mesa Air Group’s go! Airlines for partnering with Island Air. What a sketchy way for go! to manufacture some “local” credit.
- The National Republican Congressional Committee for their robocalls against Congressman Neil Abercrombie. My Slops are given not for them exercising their First Amendment right; they can criticize whomever they wish, regardless of how unjust it may be. No, it’s because they couldn’t even get Abercrombie’s phone number correct. They say “Call Neil Abercrombie at 202-225-3121″ but that’s the number to the Capitol switchboard. They only had to go to Abercrombie’s Congressional website for his correct number.
- The economy for forcing UH to consider cutting it’s first sport since 1985.
PROP AND SLOP OF THE WEEK
- Prop of the Week: Rep. Jon Riki Karamatsu for supporting civil unions in Hawaii for same-sex couples. As the House Judiciary chair, it took a great deal of courage and leadership to stand up for justice and what is right.
- Slop of the Week: go! Airlines for turning a profit. I guess this means I’m going to have to do another post about them to discourage others from flying them. If you don’t know why they’d get Slops, you’d better read this, this, and this. And while you’re doing the reading, I’d better get started on the writing for a go! post.
That’s it for this week. Be sure to visit next week for another edition of Props and Slops, my favorite feature on Capsun’s Corner.
Mahalo!

Yay, Muffi! I hope he challenged Lingle to do the same.
I wish go! Airlines would go back to where they came from. Congrats to Mayor Hannemann. I agree with Quilly, let’s hope Gov. Lingle does the same. So long Barbara, Bob and Scott. You all in your own ways did our community proud.
Not sure I understand – why does BOH get slops for financial seminars?
Unless you went and didn’t like them
Sid: Oops! Major fail on my part. It’s supposed to be Props. Corrected.
[...] used against me, but I still believe it. I’ve even given my friend Rep. Jon Riki Karamatsu Prop of the Week for his support of this [...]
