It’s a Sad, Sad Day

February 27, 2009 · 9 comments

I’m sorry I’m so late today.  Honestly, in addition to being tired, I’m surrounded by so much sad news that I wasn’t really motivated to post.  But the show must go on, so here goes…

The saddest news of all, to me, surrounds the issue of and debate over civil unions in Hawaii, which would extend marital rights to same-sex couples.  I support civil unions, equality for our fellow citizens, and justice for a demographic often ignored or discriminated against. And I know if I ever want to run for office one day that those words will come back and be used against me, but I still believe it.  I’ve even given my friend Rep. Jon Riki Karamatsu Prop of the Week for his support of this legislation.

So I was more than disappointed with Councilman Gary Okino’s comments earlier this week in his testimony against civil unions.  Luckily, the more enlightened in our social media and blogging universe were not as close-minded.  I think the Hawaii Blog was first out of the gate with comments.  Others, including ScuttleButtMoTV, Big Island Chronicle, The Kona Blog, and Pharoe followed suit, just to name a few.  Most impressive was the entry of Equality Hawaii, a new blog that was started because of Okino’s comments; and they’re even on Twitter. And don’t miss Joe Gedan’s take, The case against civil unions…sort of.

If you’d like to weigh in, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin is running a poll here.

In other sad news, as I Tweeted yesterday, the end of newspapers continues, as the Rocky Mountain News in Denver published its last edition today. Many wonder how long it will take until we are reading a similar headline about one of our two local dailies.  That will be a very sad day, but as the economy worsens, one that looks more and more likely.

Next up in the sad news department are cats.  My fiancee’s mother lost her cat, Picki, after more than 16 years with the family.  My almost mother-in-law is understandably shaken up about this.  If I can find a picture of him somewhere, I’ll put it up here or on the photo blog.  I’m much more of a dog person, but I understand how close people can get to their pets, in many ways equal members of the family.  So I could truly relate to the sad news about Mr. Leo, Hawaii blogger Ian Lind‘s cat, and the avatar of his Twitter profile.  As I was writing this post, I learned that Leo passed awayIan and Meda, my condolences.

While this pales in comparison to what I’ve written above, here is my last bit of sad news.  After much consideration, I have decided to stop daily posts on Capsun’s Corner.  My goal will be to post on a weekdaily basis, but I may post as few as three times a week.  My next post, on Monday, will be Props and Slops, on it’s new day.  Perhaps one day I can return to daily posting.

See why I wasn’t motivated to blog?

Mahalo!

Capsun I think that's one of the best things you can do now. A new beginning on the horizon :)

Everyone: Mahalo for your words of support and encouragement. I think the 3-5 posts per week will be much easier on my life. I want to point out that I worked a 60 hour week last week and still managed 5 posts before cutting weekends. That was the final straw, I guess. Now I can use the "free" time to work on wedding arrangements.

Sorry to hear about all the going ons - I was actually about to email you when I didn't see an update, but I figured something must be *really* wrong if you hadn't updated on time - and if that was the case, you probably wouldn't want to be bothered with someone nagging you to update ;)

I am surprised you went daily as long as you did. It is a tough schedule to keep up - I don't even always hit my once a week schedule (in fact, I just missed that 10 days ago).

you have a fiance?

Well I'm glad that you have decided to kick back on your blog posts and that is not a negative comment. It just for you in that you have decided on your priorities and it will make your blog even more worth the anticipation. I'm sure you will have great posts as usual and I will look forward to them even more.

I'm sorry to hear about your future mother-in-law's cat. House sitting with two dogs I can see how one can get very attached to the pets. Just know that he/she is in a better less complicated world now.

I don't know if you have checked back with the final results of the Star Bulletin Poll but, and I knew it would happen, the results were unfavorable. Sad but a fact of life.

Keep up the good work Capsun!!

Indeed a sad day. Even though I can't say I'm a daily reader of the Rocky Mountain News, its closing, and the images of the RMN newsroom when the staff were given the announcement made me feel like a friend had passed away.

On fewer postings ... I can empathize -- it's tough to do a daily blog when you've got other things going on in your life. Your posts are always well-researched and full of good content and they reflect the time you put into them. The blogger's conundrum seems to be that you could sacrifice quality for more frequent posts, or really put more time and effort into less frequent posts. Whatever you do, I'll still keep reading!

If fewer posts means better content and quality, the fact that you're cutting down on your posting won't matter. Daily posts aren't necessary to keep your readership. At least you are communicating your intentions. Keeping your reader in the loop is important.

Capsun, don't despair things are not as dire as they seem. You still have
your health and are getting married. On top of that, hey at least your name was not prominently mentioned in a Hawaii County DPW directive directing employees not to communicate with bloggers.

Best of luck getting away from blogging as often. I'm sure your fiancee will be three minutes out of the day happier for it.
