Props and Slops: February 23-March 1
Mar 2nd, 2009 by Capsun
IN MEMORIAM
- Asa Yamashita, Waianae High School teacher whom I had the pleasure of working with briefly when I worked in Waianae (February 27)
- Mr. Leo, one of blogger Ian Lind’s cats (February 27)
- Ryan Nakanishi, all-around great guy, educator, husband of one of my co-workers, and best friend of one of my friends, Art, who wrote a touching remembrance of Ryan (February 28)
- Paul Harvey, legendary radio broadcaster whose broadcasts I grew up on (February 28)
and
- The Rocky Mountain News, a Denver newspaper, after 150 years in print (February 27)
- E&O Trading Company at Ward Warehouse (February 28, per Howard Dicus)
Now, here are the top and bottom performers as I saw them this week:
PROPS
- Dan Zelikman for his great post, 10 Reasons Why Twitter is Better, in 140 Characters or Less. It was such a great post, I Tweeted it, saying if you know people who still aren’t on Twitter, the post might help convince them.
- Mokulele Airlines for bringing back the ticket coupon books. And also to Hawaiian Airlines for matching the offer with a virtual version of the coupon books.
- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for taking a paycut of 20-25% for this year budget year. I know, you’re surprised…not that he can forgo some of his $11 million salary, but that I track sports news, right?
- The Simpsons, one of my favorite TV shows, for being renewed for two more seasons. This will make it the LONGEST running show in television history.
- Kim Fassler, for her excellent pictures and anecdotes of the U. S. Supreme Court hearing on Hawaii v. OHA (the Ceded Lands case).
- LEGO for having probably the coolest business card ever! Now, how can I get one of those made for me? Or, how can I work for LEGO?
- Leonard Abess, Jr., a Miami banker, who shared his $60 million windfall with his employees. President Obama also recognized him in his State of the Union Address.
- Fellow Hawaii Tweep Arleen Anderson (@AlohaArleen) for surpassing 50,000 followers in under 5 months. Congratulations! She uses this influence to promote Hawaii, good ideas, and good works around the world.
- Kamehameha Schools trustees for taking a paycut and declining a raise.
- Mike McCartney for being appointed to lead the beleaguered Hawaii Tourism Authority. You should read Howard Dicus’ thoughts on why this is good for all involved.
- The Star-Bulletin’s politics Twitter account (@hsbpolitics) for their Tweet that allowed me to watch Congressman Neil Abercrombie’s live interview on CNN.
- Star-Bulletin reporter Gene Park (@genepark) for spending part of his last day at the Bulletin covering AQ McElrath’s Celebration of Life. He wrote about it in Labor icon recalled for her passion.
SLOPS
- Northern Trust, a bank that took $1.6 billion in bailout money, for lavish spending on concerts, parties, and dinners.
- This economy for making TIME’s piece on layoff advice timely and helpful.
PROP AND SLOP OF THE WEEK
- Prop of the Week: Hawaii blogger Ian Lind, who despite the rapidly deteriorating condition and ultimate loss of one of his beloved cats, Mr. Leo, managed to get not one, not two, but *four* blog posts up on Friday. Here they are: one, two, three, and four. And I could barely muster one.
- Slop of the Week: Former Pennsylvania Judges Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan for taking bribes to jail juveniles. With all the ills society has to offer us, can we no longer trust our judicial system?
That’s it for this week. Be sure to visit next week for another edition of Props and Slops, my favorite feature on Capsun’s Corner.
Mahalo!

The murder of Asa Yamashita is devastating. As Mom to two little girls, I know her family will suffer tremendously, as will Waianae HS, her extended family and friends. How dare that man take away her valuable life? I keep asking myself that: How dare he?
I hope that fool that murdered Asa Yamashita gets what is coming to him big time. I wish we had the death penalty here in Hawaii. He is utter trash. He is as bad as those judges in Pennsylvania. Agreeing with Paula, how dare they? Rest in Pease Asa, Paul, Ryan and Mr. Leo
Great format for a post! Many thanks for your constant support of my meager blogging efforts (in comparison to yours)! I can only thank you for continuing to be one of Hawaii’s leaders in the social media movement! Cheers brother!
Did that guy attack Asa Yamashita just because …? I never met the woman, but I read the article you linked to and the world lost an incredible person. I understand why her husband doesn’t want to hate — it will destroy him and not the other guy — but I don’t think I wouuld be strong enough to resist the urge for vengeance.
Me either Quilly so I will hate him for her husband. It sure as hell wont destroy me
Thanks for the mention, Capsun!
Damon: *That* was a big oversight on my part. Good thing you and Aaron keep the word alive.
Paula, Thom, and Quilly: Yes, this is just senseless. Some have lost a friend, the DOE has lost an excellent teacher, and Hawaii has lost someone with such a big heart.
Kim: Thanks for standing in that frigid line for hours and sharing the photos with all of us.
