There Goes the Neighborhood…

…at least the view of it anyway!

Have you ever ventured into town on a Friday night? After all, it is a pretty common practice for residents and visitors alike.  Maybe it’s to meet up with friends for a nice meal in the Ala Moana/Kakaako area or going to Waikiki for a nice show.  Whatever the reason, anyone around the Ala Moana Shopping Center and in Waikiki on Friday evenings is treated to the fireworks show put on by the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

I live off Keeaumoku St., so I have a beautiful partial view of those fireworks each and every Friday.  During the winter months, it’s at 7:30 p.m.; during the summer months, it’s at 8 p.m.  At least that was until recently.  The same busy atmosphere that caused me to forego daily postings also kept me from watching the fireworks for the last few weeks.  To my dismay, I realized my partial view was down to just a micro-view, thanks to the new building going up.

Here’s my new view (shot in the day because the night shot was just black):

I don’t know what to do.  Those fireworks were part of the reason we bought the condo we did (OK, a *very* small part).  Granted, we’ll still have our spot-on view of the 4th of July fireworks, but gone are the days of gazing over toward the general area of the Hilton Hawaiian Village to watch our weekly fireworks show.  I know they didn’t do it for me, but my fiancee and I have shared many pleasant memories of just standing on the lanai to watch the show.  Oh well, time to take some bailout money and move, maybe?

This building is the future home of Hale Pawaa, a medical professional services building.  Hawaii does need access to good doctors, and if my doctor or dentist move, they might be even closer to my home.  As it is, it’s about a 20 minute walk to either, so I’m not complaining.  Still, I’m going to miss my view.

Mahalo!

Sid: Now *that's* an interesting idea. I wonder if there's any case law on that. Perhaps one day when I'm really feeling nerdy I can explore that further.

Thom: That does sound nice, but I think we might be too lazy to make it happen. :-)

quilly: At least with the partially-built structure, I can see a few of the sparks!

You may want to make a daily record of how your view does -- or doesn't -- change. If the money for that project dries up, you may be watching the fireworks through that partially built building for some time to come.

Don't they call that progress? Sorry to hear that your view will be gone. But look on the bright side. Maybe you and your fiancee can find a new place to go, grab an ice cream and view the fireworks from a new special place. Possibly make it a date night that continues on away from your condo and just a special time for you and her. :)

I often wonder about things like this, since there's got to be some kind of good economic solution. If I recall right, this is one of the dilemnas that constantly comes in in econ classes - something that's "free" (the view) but that still adds value - who should pay for the lost value, the owner of the condo (you) or the person putting up the building?

Seems to me the real solution is when someone buys a plot of land, they can pay for certain governmental/rights guarantees (e.g., no skyscrapers, no tearing down the community park, etc) and before someone can build, those guarantees would need to be bought at a fair market value - or exchanged for new guarantees at a market value (e.g., I can build a 10 story building by paying X dollars and transferring value).
