On Civil Unions, Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is
Apr 14th, 2009 by Capsun
From my posts on California’s Prop 8 last year, you already know that I can’t fathom why we would want to deny rights to same-sex couples (or anyone for that matter) – in California, in Hawaii, or anywhere. Granted, I don’t buy in to the religious arguments against it.
I recently discovered that when doing gift registries at Target, your role can be Bride, Groom, and even Partner (presumably an accommodation for same-sex couples). Isn’t it sad that Target is more progressive and tolerant than Hawaii? Perhaps they realize that it is good for business to be progressive.
So besides blogging, what else can we do? First, register to vote. Then, make sure you vote in each and every election – and vote for progressive candidates who wouldn’t deny rights to others for what should be private religious reasons. And finally, as the post title suggests, put some money to work. By that I mean financially support the campaigns of candidates you agree with.
If you’ve been following the developments at the Legislature, you may be aware that two of the biggest advocates for civil unions (HB 444) were Rep. Jon Riki Karamatsu in the House and Sen. Gary Hooser in the Senate.
So that’s why this Thursday, I’ll be supporting my friend and a friend of equality in Hawaii, Rep. Jon Riki Karamatsu. Here are details on his fundraiser:

As usual Capsun great post. I wont be able to attend as I will be at work. But I’m going to make sure to donate to both of these two. We need more of them. And Three Cheers for Target. I hope a Prop next Monday
