Props and Slops: April 27 – May 3
May 4th, 2009 by Capsun
IN MEMORIAM
- Father Theodore Heck, the world’s oldest Benedictine monk (April 29)
- Jack Kemp, former Congressman, Bob Dole’s 1996 running mate, and former professional football player (May 2)
HAWAII
- Props: Uh-Hilo for landing Jerry Yang, co-founder of Yahoo!, as their commencement speaker.
- Honorable Mention: Several Hawaii companies for being recognized for their green practices.
GEEK/TECH/BLOG
- Props: Pacific Business News for their balanced report on Twitter and whether it is revolutionary or just a fad. Mahalo to Dawn (@tetsuko01) for sending that to me; sorry, I forgot to thank her when this was originally posted.
POLITICS/GOVERNMENT
- Props: Gov. Lingle for releasing funds to improve Salt Lake/Moanalua Public Library. I’m a big fan and patron of public libraries, so it’s reassuring to see that with all the financial problems the State is experiencing, we still want to support libraries.
- Slops: These 13 countries for being named the most religiously intolerant. Tolerance will make all of us better off.
- Dishonorable Mention: Those conspiracy theorists who are saying President Obama’s birth certificate isn’t real. I’ve ordered my birth certificate from the Department of Health and it looks just like the computer printout version the President’s campaign released when the issue first came up.
PROP AND SLOP OF THE WEEK
- Prop of the Week: Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania for switching from the Republican Party to become a Democrat. This gets the Democratic majority to within one vote of the 60 necessary to invoke cloture and block Republican filibusters. Currently, Democrats have 57 seats (including Sen. Specter), plus two independents who caucus with them. That’s 59. If Al Franken is victorious in Minnesota, that will be 60.
- Slop of the Week: (former) Vice President Dick Cheney for criticizing the Obama Administration’s multi-facted efforts to fix the problems that many believe were caused by the Bush Administration. It is his First Amendment Right to criticize President Obama, as it is mine to criticize the former Vice President.
That’s it for this week. Be sure to visit next week for another edition of Props and Slops, my favorite feature on Capsun’s Corner.
Mahalo!

How about slops to the Governor for demanding state employees take 31 days off WITHOUT pay, in effect cutting their salaries another 20%? And, has she yet to cut her own pay?
I know mine is a very unpopular stance, but we American’s cannot keep demanding more and more and more from our government while refusing to pay for it. I don’t want to pay more than anybody else, but it’s time to raise taxes.
The biggest slop to me is Arlen Specter. What a coward that man is to switch party affiliation just because he was down in the polls and looking out for his own self rather than the constituents that elected him to the Senate. He has abandoned them if you ask me just for his own political survival and that disgusts me to no end. Yes it is his right to be with whatever party he wants, but to switch mid stream does not show very good judgment to me. He along with a bunch of other long terms senators, our Senior Senator included, need to get out of the Senate anyhow. They have been there so damn long that they are out of touch with reality. Oh bring in term limits.
Hmmm the (former) VP. I guess that includes you in the slop’s this week. Politics…ain’t it grand. I think the political slop should have been the slop of the week myself.
Interesting article in Pacific Business News. I just heard on This Week In Tech with Leo Laporte and friends, that 60% of people that join Twitter leave or quit using it within one month of signing up. How they got the figure is beyond me but I can see that being the norm, myself.
Congrats to Gov. Lingle…Get your campaign warming up. We need a great US Senator
Rest in Peace Father Heck and Mr. Kemp. You served us well.
Excellent as usual Capsun…you slopper you LOL
