Props and Slops: May 4-10
May 11th, 2009 by Capsun
IN MEMORIAM
- Dom DeLuise, comic and actor; younger people might recognize him as the voice of Itchy from All Dogs Go to Heaven (May 4)
HAWAII
- Props: Jeff Watanabe, for receiving the Ellis Isle Medal of Honor. A politically-connected local attorney, he is also Chair of Hawaiian Electric Industries.
- Honorable Mention: PBS Hawaii for getting its documentary, Patsy Mink: Ahead of the Majority, picked up by other PBS stations across the U.S.

GEEK/TECH/BLOG
- Props: Star Trek for being tops at the box office this weekend. I actually got to see it on Saturday, thanks to my fiancee. I liked it, but I just didn’t love it. If I have time (doubtful), I’ll write a post about it.
- Honorable Mention: Kaneohe Ranch Company for making wide-scale, free Wi-Fi possible in Kailua through Kokua Wireless.
- Slops: Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp for announcing they will charge for online content of their newspapers. So much for democratization of the internet, but let’s see if his plan works.
- Dishonorable Mention: BlackBerry Curve for surpassing Apple’s iPhone as the best-selling smartphone this past quarter. Yes, I’m a proud iPhone owner. I’ll just have to convince others to buy an iPhone so we can win next quarter.

POLITICS/GOVERNMENT
- Props: Governor George Ariyoshi (1974-1986), State Rep. Della Au Belatti (Makiki, Tantalus, and portions of McCully and Papakolea), and Tony Gill (Chair of the Oahu County Committee of the Democratic Party of Hawaii) for participating in a panel discussion that I moderated on the future of the Democratic Party at this weekend’s county convention. They were all quite frank in their discussions, sharing passionately about their beliefs, so not only did I learn a lot, I am encouraged about the future of the Party.
- Honorable Mention: In honor of Mother’s Day, all the working moms in the halls of Congress. Check out this interesting CNN article about how they are juggling work with motherhood, just like working mothers around the world.
- Slops: Lydia Hemmings, wife of Republican Sen. Fred Hemmings, for being indicted on three counts that she stole money from the non-profit Blueprint for Change.
PROP AND SLOP OF THE WEEK
- Prop of the Week: Same-sex marriage advocates. First, to the New Hampshire and Maine legislatures for approving same-sex marriage legislation. Second, to the 10 Senators who voted to recall the civil unions bill from committee. I even got to thank Sen. Gary Hooser personally on Saturday when I saw him.
- Slop of the Week: Gov. Linda Lingle for vetoing tax hike measures that the Legislature overrode anyway. Count me among those who are disgusted that the governor is playing politics at a time when we can least afford it. She can’t say no layoffs and no tax hikes.
That’s it for this week. Be sure to visit next week for another edition of Props and Slops, my favorite feature on Capsun’s Corner.
Mahalo!

You started off with the death of Dom Deluise, and I am too sad to absorb anything else. He was a wonderful and fun comic genius and I loved him best for always being family friendly, but still able to make me roll on the floor laughing.
Rest in Peace Dom Deluise…I really wasn’t a fan but there were times when you were good.
Great news for Star Trek fans I suppose. I only liked the original series and the one with Captain Picard (simply because Whoppi Goldberg was in it). It’s too bad that the City and County doesn’t provide free Wi-Fi all over.
I agree with your slop News Corp…we shall see how long this will really last and how long they keep charging. I do have kudos for the Blackberry Curve. Yes I do own and iPhone but competition is always great…stand back Blackberry…just wait until June of this year. Take your bows while you can.
Boo Lydia Hemmings and shame on you.
Yeah and a big congrats to New Hampshire and Florida legislatures and to the 10 Senators here in Hawaii…when are the rest finally going to get it together and realize that there should be equality for all. Congrats Capsun on you getting to meet Sen. Hooser.
What politician doesn’t play politics? Sen. Arlen Specter comes to mind recently as one of the biggest players of politics. I so agree with Lingle on this. But our typical Democrat based Legislature had to override … let’s here it for all of us paying more taxes. Sounds of Obama to me.
