And I’m Back (or, A Sick Props and Slops)
May 18th, 2009 by Capsun
I’m back to the blog, but won’t be back at work until tomorrow, per doctor’s orders. But instead of my normal Monday Props and Slops, I want to have a special Sick Props and Slops edition. I’ll have my regular Props and Slops tomorrow.
PROPS
- My sister, who came to my rescue at my office on Monday to pick-up her very sick brother and drive me home. She even went in to work a little late in order to do that. So, I am thankful to her and to her supervisor who gave her the OK.
- My co-workers (even my boss!) for telling me on Monday that I didn’t look good. Despite signals that I might not be well, that was the wake-up call that really prompted me to prepare to go home.
- All my Tweeps for their get-well wishes. Specifically, I want to thank: @wishin_heart, @lavasusan, @melody, @naramalia, @jenehhh, and @MimiSiu.
- Also, to Susan J (@lavasusan) for sharing this story with me: Do Everybody a Favor: Take Sick Day. It really did help me heed my doctor’s advice/order to stay home until today. I rarely get *this* sick, so once I started to feel better, I was good to go back to work. Not so fast said the doc and I complied.
- All my blog commenters for their get-well wishes. Specifically, I want to thank: Nara, Katherine, Biz Kellam, lesliek, Thom, quilly, and damon.
- Skype, the VoIP and video conferencing service, for saving me for the two days I misplaced my iPhone. With no phone, I had to use it to call in sick to work. I also had to use it to call my doctor and TheBus to see if they found my iPhone. Silly me, it fell in a box at home!
- To my work, for having a toll-free phone number, which meant I could Skype them for free. Otherwise, it’s 2 cents a minute.
- Thom, my friend, fellow blogger, and a dedicated member of TheBus team. I used this connection to check on lost and found and my iPhone. Not only did Thom spend time looking into it at the Lost and Found, but when it didn’t turn up, he even offered to let me use his original iPhone (non-3G) to save me the replacement cost of $599 (that’s full-price, per AT&T). I’m only glad I didn’t have to take him up on the offer.
SLOPS
- Me, for misplacing my iPhone. Again, the biggest reason is that I used it to not have to leave my bed.
- Our overburdened medical system. Although I got sick on Monday, I couldn’t get in to my doctor until Thursday. Granted, they offered to “squeeze me in” on Wednesday. However, I declined that offer. Last time I did that it took 90 minutes to get in. Feeling sick, I didn’t want to have to put myself through that – and I’m not sure I would have lasted that long anyway.
PROP AND SLOP OF THE SICK WEEK
- Prop of the Sick Week: Without a doubt, my loving fiancee. She dutifully took care of me and nursed me back to health. She even made sure I had soup and healthy food to eat. Not that I ate much of it – my stomach shrank! I guess that has good implications for my goal of losing weight, but getting sick is not the way to go about it.
- Slop of the Sick Week: Our local and Hawaiian customs, especially hugging and kissing. Normally, I’m more than happy to show aloha and affection toward others. But when I’m sick and contagious, I really don’t think you want to be hugging or kissing me. Despite that warning, most people still gave me the hug, kiss, or even handshake. With the H1N1 flu going around, these customs could lead to some big problems. On the other hand, I was glad to be loved enough that people were willing to risk their health to properly greet me! Whether I was worth it remains to be seen…
Mahalo!

Mahalo for the shout out my friend. Excellent Props and Slops. Thank goodness for your financee, sister, co-workers, boss , fellow tweeters and bloggers. Your Slop of the Week I dunno if I agree with. I think family and friends throw all caution to the wind when you care and I think that is a Prop myself. I know it could be hazardous to ones health but it’s hard to convince your heart of that. Now I could go on a total rampaging rant here about Medical Doctors and Medical Offices and the time they make you wait and “squeeze” you in or “we don’t have an appointment until…” but I wont. All I’m gonna say is they disqust me and when they are driving around in their fancy cars, making who knows how much money my blood boils thinking of how long I had to wait. They put absolutely no value on their patients time. Now I know I’m generalizing and there are those out there that do their best but for the most part…”blood getting ready to boil”….I’ll stop
Aloha my friend. And glad you are getting better.
I am glad you were well loved when you were sick. As those who insisted on greeting in the traditional manner probably knew, love is and always will be the best medicine.
I’m also glad you’re up and ready to run!
Glad you’re coming back to life. Get better fast.

N

Looking forward to seeing you at 100%!
Aloha
