Memorial Service for Ira Rohter
Jun 24th, 2009 by Capsun
By now, most in Hawaii’s political and academic realms have heard of the sudden passing of Professor Ira Rohter. As I Tweeted on Monday, Ira was both a UH Political Science professor and leader/founder of the Hawaii Green Party. Many of the blog and Twitter tributes to him describe him as a good government advocate, which he was. And if you’ve never had him as a professor or even heard of him, even though he is gone, you can still read some of his thoughts in his book, A Green Hawaii.
I was one of the first to Tweet about Ira’s passing because my friend Sue, a current PhD candidate, emailed me the information. She just emailed me details of Ira’s memorial service, so I am sharing that with all of you.
Ira Rohter passed away suddenly on June 22nd, 2009, at the age of 70 of a severe infection.
He was a loving and devoted husband and father, an esteemed Professor of Political Science at UH, and a passionate believer in grassroots democracy and environmental activism. He will be greatly missed by all.
An outdoor memorial service will take place on Saturday June 27th at 9am, at the Honolulu Waldorf School, 350 Ulua St, Niu Valley, HI. Sharing an anecdote about Ira is encouraged! In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Honolulu Waldorf High School Building Fund, (808) 377-5471.
Mahalo!

Thank you for sharing my friend. May he rest in peace
I find myself wondering, as the old guard leaves us, where are the people of like caliber to fill their shoes?
[looks pointedly at Capsun] Don’t stay on the sidelines too long. We need honest, tell-it-like-it-is politicians.
Quilly – I had the same reaction as you. Ira’s true legacy would be if more (ditto on the look) stepped forward.
Thom: Thanks for being so receptive to everything I share, especially when we may not completely agree.
Quilly and Della: Thanks for the votes (ahem) of confidence. I’ve made no secret that the thought of running for office has been on my mind. However, I still think I need a few more years of experience before I can throw my hat in the ring. And right now, my agency needs people like me. But we’ll see…and when the time comes, you can bet I’ll come asking for your support.
