I’ve been visiting and helping (when I can) with the Makiki Community Learning Center (formerly the Makiki Library) this year. Until my wedding was imminent, I was also trying to help with their Rediscover Makiki event, which is really a Sunset in the Park, Makiki’s version of the Sunset on the Beach events sponsored in part by the City. Since returning from my honeymoon, I haven’t been much help, but I do want to help promote this *FREE* event (additional cost for food or crafts).
If you haven’t heard about this event yet, it’s not for a lack of trying on the organizers’ part. They have been posting at Makiki Talks (a community-focused blog), have a Twitter account (@MakikiSunset), and have a Ning profile – among other things. The event will be at Makiki District Park, but if you need to use Google maps, the address for the Makiki Community Learning Center is 1527 Keeaumoku Street. Please note: this is a 2-day event; while the Saturday schedule is detailed below, there will be events from 5-10 on Friday.

Event Description
The City & County of Honolulu, Friends of the Makiki Community Library & Hui o Makiki host this year’s Rediscover Makiki. On Saturday, Hui o Makiki’s Citizens’ Resource Center returns, along with a new urban arts center featuring workshops & demonstrations by some of Hawaii’s best hip hop artists.
The following is a partial schedule of Rediscover Makiki’s SATURDAY, JULY 25th activities:
ENTERTAINMENT – MAIN STAGE
12 noon – Adam (aka Von Baron)
1 pm – Ron Miyashiro & Friends with Keith & Carmen Haugen
2 pm – Middle Eastern Dance Artists of Hawaii
3 pm – Typical Youth
5 pm – Georgine’s Halau

7:30 pm – Movie Screening: Iron Man
URBAN ARTS CENTER – VOLLEYBALL COURTS
10 am-5 pm Live art demonstrations by Hawaii’s urban artists including Prime, J, Devour & Eukarezt.
10 am-12 noon – 1st Teen Art Workshop led by Diverse Art Center
12 noon – Skate Park Demo by APB Skaters
1 pm – Kwalified followed by Spoken word Joy Nakama, Lakeisha Toussant & Sarah Izumi
1:30 pm – BBoy Crew performance by JFF
2 pm – Comedian David Lee
2-4 pm – 2nd Teen Art Workshop
HUI o MAKIKI CITIZENS’ RESOURCE CENTER – AGEE AUDITORIUM
10 am-5 pm – Navigating through government services and community resources can be difficult and confusing. Visit the Citizens’ Resource Center in the Auditorium for all kinds of helpful community and government services. These include: STRIDE, Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii, State DOH-Early Intervention, State Health Insurance Assistance Program, The Sage Plus Program, City Department of Community Services-Elderly Affairs Division, HPD-Dare Keiki ID Program, Arcadia, First Christian Church, State DHS-Retired Senior Volunteer Program, & more.
Special activities in the Citizens’ Resource Center include:
11 am – Neighborhood Watch Presentation with HPD & Officer Taylor Hoopii
1 pm – Talk Story with Sen. Carol Fukunaga & Representatives Della Au Belatti & Sylvia Luke
4 pm – Talk Story with Sen. Carol Fukunaga & Rep. Karl Rhoads
MAKIKI COMMUNITY LIBRARY BOOK SALE & TOURS
10 am-6:30 pm – Browse through the used book sale in the Library’s Fasi Center & check out the Keiki Corner.
MAKIKI MARKETPLACE
10:00 am-7:30 pm – CHRISTMAS IN JULY – Start your Christmas shopping early by purchasing unique products by local vendors.
SATURDAY ONLY Marketplace Vendors include: She’s A Keeper Creations; Diva Creations; Aroma Therapy; The Christmas Sock Lady; Charly’s Cookies & Things ; Lilacs & Ginger/Belle Roce; and Wildtree.
FRIDAY & SATURDAY Marketplace Vendors include: The Bathcream Shop; A Collection by Julia; Lau Lau Woodworks; Wood Stuff; Traci Fernandez with Tupperware; J’ Hawaiian Totes & Things; T&S Productions; Kupukupu Crations; and Laha’ole Lima Creations; Ha-Y-N.
