So a week ago, I received the following email from a service called blogRank:
Hi Capsun,
Maybe you’re interested to know that you’re ranked at #26 on the Hawaii top 75 in blogRank.
http://www.invesp.com/blog-rank/Hawaii
This list tracks close to 20,000 blogs and evaluates them based on 16 different factors. The algorithm we use is far superior to any other,IMHO. It just took us over 8 months to develop this. I would love to hear your feedback.
Cheers,
Shereen

From the post Ian Lind wrote about it and comments on Facebook from Damon Tucker and Aaron Stene (of The Kona Blog), it appears that all Hawaii blogs that made it on blogRank received similar emails.
But my first reaction was, “Really? Capsun’s Corner is 26th in Hawaii?” – I had to check it out! And I did. Being the detailed and details person that I am, here’s some of what I found.
The site has many different ways to rank a blog
- Hawaii Blogs: The ultimate rank – Capsun’s Corner is ranked 34th
- Hawaii Blogs: by Feedburner RSS membership* – Capsun’s Corner is *not* ranked in this category
- Hawaii Blogs: by unique monthly visitors – Capsun’s Corner is *not* ranked in this category
- Hawaii Blogs: by Yahoo indexed pages – Capsun’s Corner is *not* ranked in this category
- Hawaii Blogs: by Google indexed pages – Capsun’s Corner is ranked 31st
- Hawaii Blogs: by number of incoming links (via Yahoo) – Capsun’s Corner is ranked 10th
- Hawaii Blogs: by the ratio of incoming links to numbers of pages – Capsun’s Corner is ranked 11th
- Hawaii Blogs: by pages per visit – Capsun’s Corner is ranked 40th
- Hawaii Blogs: by Google PR – Capsun’s Corner is ranked 45th
- Hawaii Blogs: by Technorati rank – Capsun’s Corner is *not* ranked in this category
- Hawaii Blogs: by Alexa rank – Capsun’s Corner is ranked 54th
- Hawaii Blogs: by Compete rank – Capsun’s Corner is *not* ranked in this category
- Hawaii Blogs: via Social sites – Capsun’s Corner is ranked 28th (on Delicious)
So what does it all mean? Well, besides that I’m a bit of a nerd, not much, I think. For those categories that I was in the 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s in the rankings, I think that’s about right. But when Capsun’s Corner places 10th and 11th, I start to wonder about the methodology. In the “Incoming Links” rankings, how did I beat out the Hawaii House Blog written by Georgette Deemer (@georgettedeemer) and Thelma Dreyer (@ThelmaDreyer)? Ditto for the “Links to Pages” rankings, where I beat Maoli News (@maolinews). And finally, I wonder how it all got smashed together to give me an overall ranking of 26, where I again beat out the Hawaii House Blog.
Sounds to me like something’s funky with the methodology. I’m not sure why I’m so suspicious; I get at least one email like this or asking for advertising rates per week, so it’s not out of the ordinary. Or should I just accept that what I have to say is that interesting (said with all the sarcasm I can muster up)?
On a serious note, mahalo to you and all my readers for continuing to read what I have to share – and for helping Capsun’s Corner place in the rankings. It may not be much nor anything big, but it’s still nice to be recognized.
Mahalo!
