Do you live in Kapahulu, Kaimuki, Palolo Valley, St. Louis Heights, Manoa, Moiliili, Mc Cully, Kakaako, Ala Moana or Makiki? If so, you probably live in Honolulu’s Council District 5.
And there’s a mail-in election going on. Usually, voters have to wait until November of an even numbered year to vote. And I’ve already suggested you do it often. But registered voters in District 5 have an opportunity to fill the seat left vacant by the late Duke Bainum in this first mail-in special election in Hawaii.
The last day to mail your ballots to ensure they are received and counted is today, Wednesday, August 5th. Completed ballots must be received at the City Elections Office by August 7th – a postmark by this date is not enough.
Alternatively, you may also hand deliver your ballots to the Election Offices until 6pm on August 7th:
Honolulu Hale, City Hall
Office of the City Clerk
530 S. King St., Rm. 100
Honolulu, HI 96813
And just in case you forgot who was running, here’s a list taken from my official ballot:
CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU
Councilmember, Dist V
Vote for not more than one (1)
BORNHORST, Heidi L.
CAIN, Michael
CHING, Wendell S. L.
HAYES, Gladys Gerlich
KINNEY, Nathaniel
KOBAYASHI, Ann H.
LEE, Philmund (Phil)
MATSUNAGA, Matt
PERALTO, Keolu Jacob
QUIMBY, James O.
ROCKWELL, Phillip D. (Rocky)
SIMS, Butch
WAIALEALE, George (G.W.)
WINFREE, Earl
The two names that jump out are Ann Kobayashi (who formerly held this seat) and Matt Matsunaga (former State Senator and candidate for Lt. Governor and Congress). However, I also note the strong presence of newcomer Nat Kinney. He has strong union support and as my friend Councilmember Ikaika Anderson proved, young and fresh may be just what voters want. Finally, anyone involved in Democratic Party politics will know George Waialeale.
It looks like it’ll be a good race. So, have you made your voice heard?
And if you couldn’t vote this time around because you weren’t registered, why not take some time to register to vote? Election Day 2010 will be here sooner than you think. It doesn’t matter if you agree with me or not, just that you participate!
Mahalo!
