About a month ago, I wrote about Capsun’s Corner being listed on a service called blogRank (A Quick Note from blogRank).
I also said it “Sounds to me like something’s funky with the methodology.” when my ranking beat out others whom I believe are more popular, and dare I say, better, blogs than mine. That got the following response from blogRank:
Hi Capsun,
I recently came across your blog post about your rank on our system blogRank here: http://capsun.org/2009/07/29/a-quick-note-from-blogrank/#comments.
I wanted to convey my congratulations to you once again for your ranking, and let you know that the e-mail we sent is not spam or some kind of fraud.
blogRank is actually a fairly new creation from Invesp Consulting. We collect and gather different blogs and rank them according to over 20 different factors. It’s something that we thought would be interesting to do since we have been running our own blog http://www.invesp.com/blog/ for three years now, and we wanted to determine a way to measure its success and other blogs success as well.
Because travel is such a popular category, we recently decided to release it, and one of the sub-categories we chose to release was Hawaii. We will be releasing more categories every week or every other week or so.
Now, you mentioned our methodology was appearing kind of “funky”. Well the thing is, our methodology weighs factors differently. Factors which can be manipulated such as, incoming links and pages indexed by Google or Yahoo, have less weight compared to factors such as, pages per visit or RSS membership. Additionally, each blog receives different weight for the different factors depending on the category it is listed in, because it is measured against all the blogs in that particular category. For example, if a blog is listed under two categories: social media and blogging, it will most likely receive different points for RSS membership, Digg first page stories, Compete Ranking, etc in these two different categories.
So, certain factors of yours that are weighed higher in our system may have contributed to an overall higher ranking than some other blogs.

Thanks for your post!
Cheers,
Shereen
And here’s my response to her:
Thanks for clarifying. It was meant to be self-depricating, not to impugn the service. I assumed it’s a proprietary algorithm. Thanks for including me. Now, onward to move up in the rankings…
Several people congratulated me (thanks!), several wanted to know how to get listed (I don’t know), and several mentioned they didn’t list themselves. But the funny thing is, neither did I. Honestly, a month later, I’m far more impressed with being listed on blog Rank because they found me, I didn’t find them.
Now, would you go out and tell your friends to come visit Capsun’s Corner? You know, so I can move up in the rankings.
Mahalo!
