Our “Smash and Grab” Experience

I always like to learn about new things and new terminology, but this is one that I wish I could only read about.  A “smash and grab” was what the police officer told us happened to our car on Monday.  Basically, someone broke into our car while my wife was at work.  This is the first time we’ve been the victim of a crime, so I’m not sure if our experiences are normal or not.

I guess I should be upset with the person (whom I just assume is a male) who perpetrated this act.  But that’s just some nameless, faceless person.  I’m probably more upset with well-intentioned people who offer advice or ask questions:

  • Where did you park? My wife was parked at work - in an elementary school parking lot!  Normally, I’d consider that a pretty safe place to leave a vehicle.
  • What did you have in plain view (that would make someone want to break in)? Not much.  4 year-old iPod headphones, an iPod holder, an FM transmitter (which was broken in the getaway), and an iPod car charger.  Honestly, this stuff was worth (maybe) $50.  I didn’t even like it and would have gladly given it away.

But that’s not the point.  I think what is lost on most people is the fact that we are the victims here.  It shouldn’t matter where we parked or what someone could have seen.  The culprit was the one who committed a crime here.  And that’s the person who is in the wrong – not us.

We did, however, appreciate those of you who sympathized with us, especially those who have had similar experiences.  Two days, lots of glass shards, and $224.03 later, the window is back to normal.  Despite the inconvenience and my complaining, we should be grateful the car wasn’t stolen – hey, it is a Honda.  That would’ve been an even bigger hassle.

The Vice Principal helped my wife clean most of this mess up

That sucks C-

When I was dorming at UH, I had to park my car on Dole St. I remember seeing many cars that had been victimized in a similar fashion.

I always left my door unlocked just so that someone wouldn't do that...

Well go figure about half way through my 2nd year on campus... someone did the exact same thing to my car!

The door was UNLOCKED and THEY TOOK NOTHING... Only searched for things... cause I never left anything in my car!

Effing Punks... at the time I was a pretty broke student so I went about a month with plastic over my window!

Andrew: I still have that same feeling of safety and security when I'm back home in South Kona. One of my uncles still leaves his house door unlocked. Once that feeling is gone, it's gone forever.

Nathan: Yikes! Now that's really bad - I can only imagine the feeling of being invaded you must have felt. And you were far less fortunate in that they stole the car. Maybe the next car we buy will be an American one - I don't think they get stolen much in Hawaii. :-)

Capsun, sorry to hear about this stupid act of stupidness. Our car got broken into and stolen right in our own apartment complex years ago when we lived near Punahou Street. They eventually found the car, but who cared at that point. Glad to hear nobody got hurt.

Seems to be a sign of the times as the economy deteriorates. An armed robbery of the ABC Store in Kona this week? One nice part of moving to the Big Island was relaxing my personal level of paranoia. Time to renew some of those big city security habits.

Everyone: Mahalo for caring so much about us. Yes, we are glad no one got hurt. I just wonder what goes through someone's head when they see something and just decide to take it.

Thom: @earthee made the same point about blaming the victim in a rape case. I'm glad most of the people I know are better than that.

Travis: I hadn't thought of it that way, but I'm sure this is not the first instance of bad things happening to good people (yes, I assume I'm good people). :)

Capsun, I hope they catch this lowlife and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law. There is no excuse for theft and destruction of property, especially when there are so many institutions and people, like you, who donate time and money to help the community. I'm hoping that this will be a "once in a lifetime experience" for you both!

You know Capsun...you should never have to worry about what you leave in your car or where you park. It's the scumbags that just don't care and will violate anything for as little as a few bucks. I'm very sorry this happened. and just glad that your wife wasn't hurt. Property can be replaced always. Yes, it's a headache to do, but just thank goodness no one was physically hurt. You know I've always heard in a rape case that the woman that gets raped, the victim, is the one that is made to look like that bad guy. It's terrible. We need to change a few things around here don't cha think? Have a great weekend and I hope they find those idiots that did this to you and your wife. I'm sure it's slim to none but there is always hope :)

Glad you're safe after this aggravating and costly experience. It's sad how desperate some people are.

I am glad your wife is safe and that it was "only" a window. :p

You are right, as a society we are so used to this kind of stuff that we blame the victim for not preventing it. "You should have known better." Our energy would be better spent in trying to balance the "haves" and "have nots" in the world so there would be no reason to steal.
