Adopt A School Day: One day…for our future

Remember when I invited you to Come Rediscover Makiki?  Well, in addition to helping a great organization (Makiki Community Library), having some great food, and watching two great movies, I had a couple chance meetings.  One was with Patrick Tomiyasu, who is a 2009 National Vice President of the Jaycees (United States Junior Chamber).  He told me about an upcoming project that he is spearheading in Hawaii and I’m sorry I haven’t shared it with you until now.

Adopt-A-School Day is Sunday, October 11, 2009:

The purpose of the Jayees Statewide Adopt-A-School Day is to mobilize the community in service to Hawaii’s schools.  That’s a pretty good purpose, isn’t it?

Here are some major ways to help:

  • Volunteer (either your group or yourself)
  • Sponsor (business/organization)
  • Donate to the event (individual)

Patrick shared with me some of the goals of Adopt-A-School Day for 2009:

  • To provide service and assistance to at least 100 of Hawaii’s schools.
  • To generate 5,000 hours of planning and service time focused on schools.
  • To raise $10,000 in cash and donations for Hawaii schools.
  • To hold a Kick-Off Celebration that will bring together people and organizations who share a desire to make a tangible impact on our schools.
  • To generate publicity for the event, to include newspaper ads, social networking, radio, and other media.

They’re a great organization working on an even greater project. I encourage you to support it in any way you can. If you have time to organize a full event on your own, that would be ideal, but because I haven’t given you much time, please consider a way you can contribute individually.  Remember, any contribution will help make a difference and help our schools. More information and sign-up forms are available at their website, http://adoptaschoolday.org/.

Mahalo!
