Remembering AQ: Joanne Kealoha

Note: This is part of my (supposedly) Weekly AQ Wisdom special series. To see other posts in the series, click on the Best Bets tab at the top of any page here and scroll down to the “AQ McElrath” section. Material for this post was taken from information available at her Celebration of Life in February. “

“Ah Quon influenced so many of us at the ILWU – by inspiring us or scolding us or just caring for us. AQ was slarger than life in her knowledge and accomplishments, eloquent and fiery in her speeches, using more vocabulary than I’ll ever know, yet she made time to talk with a worker, write a card to members and retirees, and inquire about our families. As busy as she was, she made mango bread and chutney to give with her thanks for a kindness. We’ve lost a special person, a true believer in unionism, an organizer to the end, and a good human being.”

-Joanne Kealoha, ILWU Local 142 Social Services Coordinator
